I have just bought a scanner, and would like some advice on what is the best format to save the scanned files. What are the pros and cons of .jpg and .bmp ?

One of the best explanations around. Always save originals in a lossless format such as PNG or TIFF.

JPG for the web. PNG for 24-bit colour AND transparency. GIF for 256 colours and transparency. PNG or GIF for screen shots. WMF for scalable graphics.

That was a great help for me understanding the various formats.

First if you are going to edit it use Tiff, until you are satisfied with the results then JPG as final save

Still best to keep the original file - you may want to work on it again. You can't put back what isn't there.

You can always create .jpegs when necessary using Save As.
