Photo slideshow on DVD

I am a newbie to DVD writing so some advice would be welcome. I want to put some digital photos onto a DVD to view on my TV. I've tried doing this using Nero 6 but the quality of the photos is appalling. Is there a better program to use or is this just an inevitable consequence of the conversion to video? Is there anything I can do to improve the final result? The original photos are in jpg format at a resolution of 1024x768 and are of good quality.
P.S. The photos look awful on my pc monitor not just the tv screen.

I use Easy cd 6 and get good results. Put background over and nice transition effects. Try taking photo's of a different subject, might not look so awful then :-)
