Phantom CD/DVD drive appears

Just recently I have have a phantom CD/DVD player take up residence on my 98SE PC! It’s an ‘AXV CD/DVD-ROM’ and assigned to the drive letter after the existing real CD-RW and DVD items. Tried time and again to remove it through System Properties, even search-and-delete using Regedit, but it appears back there after the next boot-up.

Beginning to think it’s some new marketing gag to get you to go and buy the hardware!!!

Any ideas on how to get rid of it please?

Are you sure this isn't a virtual drive created by software like Nero?

Aaah-Ha! Thats a good point... Nero Help mentions a virtual device.
But I've had Nero v5 in this PC for 2 years and not seen it before, but it only gets used a couple times per month to back-up. Could it have been introduced in my recent upgrade to v5.5?
