Pen drive changes drive letter for DVD drive

Friend had a problem with accessing the DVD drive from the shortcut I put on the desktop. It seems he has used a pen drive which has taken the drive letter D, so the shortcut no longer works, the DVD drive is now E. I have sorted it for him.

But as this is a common scenario, is there any advice for new users of pen drives?

Go into Admin Tools/Disk Management put your pen drive in and then change the drive leter to something like Z (At the other end of the alphabet)

Remove the pen drive and then Uninstall the optical drive in Device Manager and Reboot.

This will/should reassign the letter D to the optical drive.

Thanks, I've already shown him how to resolve the problem.

I wondered if there should be a general warning on these devices, something like 'This device will change your drive letters)?
