peer to peer wireless networking

Help! on the advice of a member of sales staff at PC World I brought a Belkin wireless G USB network adapter for my base PC which has Win XP home and a broadband conection. I also brought a Belkin wireless notebook network card. I was informed that as long as my base PC was on I could share my braodband conection.
I can get as far as both computers seeing each other eg, the icon placed on the tool bars on both light-up green, but I don't seem to be able to get either to show they are communicating any other way, leave alone share the internet.
Does anyone know of a idiots guide to show how I can set this up as I am fed-up with fighting for the internet with my hotmailing daughters. Thanks
