PDFs won't open from web pages

I have a problem when trying to open PDFs from a web page. I instantly get a message box saying -"The Adobe Acrobat/Reader that is running cannot be used to view PDF files in a web browser. Version 8 or 9 is required. Please exit and try again"
But I'm pretty certain Version 9 is fully installed, and it seems to happily open PDFs attached to emails. I can also right click and use "Save Target As" to download the PDF and it then opens straightaway as a saved document.
Any ideas please?
Is something blocking the way it should work?

In Adobe Reader, Edit > Preferences, click Internet on the left, make sure Display PDF in browser is ticked.

Thanks, but I've checked and this was ticked already problem continues...
Any further thoughts appreciated

I had exactly the same problem and tried various versions of adobe with various settings and failed miserably.

The answer 'Foxit reader'. Absolutely brilliant.
