pdf problems

I have uploaded a pdf file to my webserver, and made the link on the webpage (with .pdf at the end of the file name)
However when I click on the link it comes up with a blank page with a very small coloured box in the top lef hand corner.
I have checked and rechecked numerous times to check that the spelling on the pdf file and on the webpage is correct, and made sure the link has the usual .pdf at the end.
I've also noticed that when I want to view pdf files from other websites I get the same small little box.
On aol I get the message "Rich Media blocked"
Could this be the problem.
A couple of years ago I had a number of pdf files on my website with no problems.
I am at a loss.
Both the webpage with the correct link and the pdf file were loaded to the same folder.
I have since taken them off.
Any ideas please
