PDA not readable

When I connect my PDA (ipaq 114) via usb to my windows 7 laptop it shows up on explorer. However, when I try to open it up to see what files/programs are on the PDA it disappears from explorer and I cannot read it. If I plug the PDA in again it shows up again but I still cannot look at contents. Plugging in to desktop (windows xp)it is accessible as mobile device and I can see all files/programs etc. I have sync loaded on desktop and "sync center" on laptop which does not seem to be the same as on xp pc. Where am I going wrong please?

Perhaps it is just not compatible with Windows 7?
