PCI SLOTS

Can someone please tell me if the PCI 2.1 is the standard slot for desktop machines, and for how long it has been fitted to PCs?
I wish to add a Belkin USB 2 card, which requires a PCI 2.1 slot, to my IBM Aptiva 2139 E57 (1998 vintage) but I am unsure if the PC's slots are in fact PCI 2.1.
The computer's manual does not mention the type of slot and the IBM site doesn't cover these elderly models!
Any help will be appreciated, as I have no wish to upset a PC that still gives good service.
Thank you.

Below is the introduction dates of each pci version.

?? Initial PCI 1.0 proposal by Intel in 1991
?? Introduced by PCI-SIG as PCI 2.0 in 1993
?? Version 2.1 approved in 1995
?? Recent version 2.3 approved in March 2002

PCI 1 Released June 1992 Original
PCI 2 April 1993
PCI 2.1 June 1995 66MHz
PCI 2.2 Jan 1999 (power management)

As far as I am aware all these are mechanically identical with varying voltages on later specs. Your dates seem to indicate you are ok

Many thanks for the responses.
I have followed the 'checking' procedure as suggested and both my PCs, one bought in 1995 and the other in 1998, are PCI 2.1 equipped.
