pci probs

i hav recently set up a ntework between 2 pc's in my home. while setting it up the network card in one of the machines caused the pc to not boot at all. after much playing around in bios i set the whole board back to default and eventually got it working. a month down the line and it seems to be doing it again and no amount of bios tweaking seems to cure it. I am running a gigabyte ga-7va with windows xp pro inc sp1. I believe it has something to do with my pci set up but i cant fathom what it is. can anyone help?
cheers in advance

changing the LAN card to another slot?

Have you got the latest WinXP driver for the card?
