I have installed a PCI firewire card but have found that although recordings from my camcorder using microsoft movie maker are fine visually, the audio recording is gappy. Any ideas what's wrong?

This is a very common problem.

Provided that you computer meets at least the minimum requirements for video work (most will nowadays) it would be worth your while trying out more comprehensive and dedicated video processing software.

Also you may be dropping a few frames:

Dropped frames may result from overcharging your computer's processor by:
Having too many applications running
Using too big frame sizes
Using a too small compression
Using a slow capture/graphics card
Using a DMA-disabled hard disk
Using a fragmented hard disk
Having a virus scanner running
Having an imaging software running.
