windows XP
when shuutting down gets to screen Windows is shutting down - and sits there - you can here clicking every thirty seconds or so as though it is trying to switch off -
only way then is to hold off button in till it powers down -- starts up ok next time

any ideas

wait until it shuts down, it obviously is trying to do something. try running a full system scan using scan disk for erors. look at your task manager to see if there is anything running in the background that is the cause?

gets beyond the normal shutsddown - so there is no going back - and the only option is to pull the plug have looked in task manager and closed any dubious looking ones but to no avail

You don't have IO Bit smartdefrag running do you?
I Found that I could not shut down with it running.
Got rid of it.
Good Luck

- will let you know

I'm using Iobit smartdefrag and got no problems shutting down, I think there was a bug with an early version that's been sorted now.

I will try it again.

  Sethhaniel 14:19 29 Apr 07
