PC won't shut down!

My mother recently bought a Packard Bell Imedia PC running Windows XP. But when you try to shutdown nothing happens. Consequently I have to turn it off using the power button which is obviously not a good idea. It has an AMD 1.8Ghx processor, 256 Mb ram and very few programs running on it. I've tried looking for conflicts in device manager but everything seems to be fine. Any ideas?

look in control panel/power options/advanced tab

look at the bottom two selection boxes,

when i press the power button should be set as "shut down"

when i press standby on my computer is set to "sleep"

hope this helps

Having just had this problem I found the answer in windows help. It gave two pages of instructions concerning the 'msconfig' Click run and type msconfig and you will get a windows with several tags. My cure was to clear the tick in the 'load startup group iyems'. Failing this print out the instructions from windows help file.
