PC Won't read CD/DVD's

I'm running XP SP3 on a HP Pavilion 743 UK PC. It will not read anything on a 'professional' CD/DVD.

I generally get the message E:\ in not a valid Win
32 application.

I have run Disk Part, - List Volume, -E:, -DIR through the cmnd prompt and the contents can be read so to me, that suggests it's not a h/ware problem.

I have than removed the DVD player from the hardware list and restarted the PC with the same result. I have tried changing player but that doesn't work either.
