PC wont load windows even in safe mode

Have an E-machine that wont load windows (XP Home), so cant get to a command prompt.

At present only option is the recovery disk provided. However this only gives me the option of complete reinstall with resulting loss of data/settings.

Not my pc but any suggestions before I take this drastic step?

There is no floppy drive to take a boot up disk.

Boot the machine to the bios by hitting the del key during the boot sequence.

Once in the bios make sure that the boot sequence is selected for the hard drive and reboot.

If this does not work go into the bios again and reboot to the CD drive and boot again. you may have to use the recovery disk, it may not over write your data, this will depend on the recovery disk. So, first check the manufactures website for any information relating to this...

Now perhaps you will buy an external USB drive and backup your data on that. Well worth the cost for the peace of mind.
