I set O&O defrag for offling defragmentation on the next reeboot.
When I restarted, it stalled and restarted itself again.
Now I can't get into windows.
Please can you tell me how I can reinstall this file please.

The message is as follows:

Windows could not start bwcause the following file is missing or corrupt:

Windows root>\sysytem32\hal.dll.

Please reinstall a copy of the above file.

Thanks for your replies.
I have spent many hours reading through your links and trying the suggestions with no luck.

I have installed a spare HDD with Windows XP to gain access to and save documents from the old HDD.

All that remains to do once this is done is to try a windows repair operation and revive the old HDD.

If that does't work either then I've no other option but to format and reinstall winxp.

Is there anyway to access and save my email adresses from the old HDD please.

When I open the windows adress book from the old HDD it just opens the empty address book from the new HDD.

My contacts must be stored somewhere on the old HDD surely?

I would think that you need first to import the wab file from your old hd to new hd and follow the very detailed instructions as in the above link to another thread on pca forum.
