p.c. with win 98se locking up on defrag

Sorry to trouble you with a win98 p.c. problem.
When I try to run defrag the p.c. freezes requiring a hard reboot. I would appreciate any comments.
The p.c. has 256k Ram has win 98se. I have disabled the screensaver and virus checker. Also is there a memory manager that I could use. Only intend to keep the p.c. for about 6 months. so do not want to spend to much money, many thanks

Try defragging in Safe Mode click here or use Diskeeper Lite click here

If your hard drive is running out of space you can expect trouble with defragging. I find it slows down after 50% full and starts getting into serious trouble after about 75%.

I think you have to do a scandisk first in 98 or
defrag does lock up.See this link:-click here

See if you can compress the drive if it is getting full.
