Sounds like your PSU has died!

  crosstrainer 08:53 10 Jul 09

I'm afraid its as Technotiger Say's, a classic dead or dying PSU.

Things you could try to confirm this:

1) Open the case, and disconnect all but your master HDD

2) Re-boot

If that still fail, then I think you will need to buy a new power supply.

When I say disconnect everything, I mean everything that is not required for boot-up IE: all Optical (DVD /CD drives)

Floppy if present and all usb devices.

Make and model of PC will help us to find you a good deal on a new psu if you need one.

The psu fans spin,as does the cpu fan. I will try the disconnecting the drives it is a novatech barebones bundle using foxconn motherboard, intel one core 3.00 cpu with ide drives hdd & sata dvd.

It is not unusual for the fans to spin and lights to show, even with a dead PSU, those things don't need much power at all.

disconnected drives one at a time then restarted each time.

floppy, optical drives, hard drives all disconnected still the same.

any other ideas before I pop down to PCW and fork out for a PSU. can a psu be duff and spin the fans?

Yes!

I would advise taking the dead PSU with you, so that you are sure to get a replacement that fits all dimensions!

thanks everyone it a standard off the shelf one when bought called an "EZ COOL" 450W will look for a stronger watt one.

  crosstrainer 10:39 10 Jul 09

Yep, you have done all you can make sure you get one with the correct mobo connections:

Just a couple of thoughts, but I can recommend both of these.

Guys thanks for your help so far.

just put in a new PSU a jeantech artic 600w a lovely silent running psu.

But still not joy I have inspected the MB no obvious blown or damaged capacitors or burn smells.

is there any were to go other than a new board? or anything else to try.

a new board will mean new oem vista,[pity w7 not out], and new cpu/ram/graphics present one AGP card.
