Our desktop PC will not start. When we turn it on you hear one beep, then a pause then 6 beeps and only the power light is on and nothing else happens. Anyone have an idea. Thanks in advance.

Sounds terminal, but check your graphics card and memory modules, to be going on with.

Depends on your make of Bios but for AMI 6 beeps points to motherboard controller. Pobable means new motherboard

Try re-seating the Graphics card if it as one. or look at the back for another monitor onboard Graphics Socket to try. failing that I would say a duff Graphics card

For an award bios 6 short means :- The chip on your motherboard that controls your keyboard isn't working. First, try another keyboard. If that doesn't help, reseat the chip that controls the keyboard, if it isn't soldered in. If it still beeps, replace the chip if possible. The chip is erroring in the gate A20 switch that allows the system to run in virtual mode. Replace the motherboard if the chip is soldered in

Thank you for all your replies.
Since we don't know what motherboard is in our computer. We started by opening up our PC and gave it a good cleaning, checked and made sure everything was connected right. We then turned it on and it made the same beeps. Then gave it one more try and now it started. Yeah!

Not sure what it was but hopefully it won't happen again!

Thanks,
Karen
