PC will not boot

I am looking at an old machine 'DAN' for a friend, and the PC will not boot up.

When switching on it does the memory test, then displays 'Press F1 for setup' followed by keyboard detected. If I press F! it says 'Entering Setup....please wait. At that point the machine just sits there.

There are no bleeps at start up, only the diskette drive makes a noise..There is no diskette present..

Any ideas would be appreciated..

What does the computer do if you don't press 'F1'?

you will need a BOOT disk.
you will also have to enter the BIOS
( keep taping DEL)and detect the hard drive?

If I dont mpress F!, the computer just sits there after 'Keyboard...detected.

I have tried a boot disk, bit the diskette drive doesn't get as far as reading. Continuing pressinf 'F1' or 'delete' does nothing, except the keyboard buffer gets filled

Is the Hard Drive light coming on at all??

Jester2K II

The Hard disk light only comes on for a brief moment, when the computer is first powered up..

As there are no bleeps, it looks to me as if the motherboard is defunk.

A suggestion.

When did this happen. It might be a nasty virus.

W95 spaces does this on June 1st.

The virus modifies the MBR data area so that the first partition will point to itself. This prevents the system from booting.
