pc will not boot

system details: amd xp3200, nvidia lx5700, 160 gb harddrive. problem, pc was shut normaly and a couple of hours later went to restart and just hang after the post screen.
there is power to harddrive, the SATA cable is firmly plugged in bothe ends. if sata cable removed it will boot from cd if required. help!

Have you got a spare SATA cable you could try?

Corrupt boot files on HDD maybe.

In BIOS set First boot device as CDrom second as sata.

boot from XP CD to recovery consul and at the C:\windows prompt

type fixmbr press enter

and then fixboot press enter, remove the CDand
type exit to reboot the PC.

Does this make any differenc?

sorry for delay in reply but am on shift! new sata cable made no difference. boot from cd and get drive not recognised, or something like that. so i have to create boot disc and get new bios! wish me luck.
