PC Upgrade - Graphics card related question

I currently have an Athlon XP1700 cpu and graphics card is a GeForce 3 ti-200. I want to upgrade my graphics card (gaming reasons) to a Radeon 9600 XT. This new graphics card has "8x AGP" support. However my motherboard is a Socket A A7A266-E (AliMaGiK 1 chipset) which I think has "4x AGP" support. What does this mean ? Does it mean that the Radeon card won't fit my Motherboard or is it just saying that you can have 8x AGP support if your motherboard supports it - but that the new card should work fine??

Thanks in advance.

Check the spec of the card. Most ATI 9600 card will support 8x, 4x and 2x, but not all. Even it fit, the card will only run at 4x, but some say not big difference between 4x and 8x.

I have a Radeon 9600 8x AGP card running in my 4x AGP slot, no problems at all mate.

So go ahead.

Me too. I got an8x card that only runs at 4x cus of the board. Bit of a waste I suppose.
