PC TOOLS and Xtree Gold

Back in Dos days and even Windows 3 .... these Dos based utilities could work wonders in displaying the contents of otherwise unreadable files.

Another use for Xtree was to recover deleted files. This used to show all recently deleted files usually with a ? instead of the first letter of the filename....There was also a mark awarded on the chances of recovery, though I think this was based on the date of deletion rather than anything more clever than that.

Does such a utility exist for Win 98 and upwards?

It is not urgent, but something I would like for the feeling of extra certainty and control of the system.... I had PCTools before windows and found my first virus by using it.......One of the settings showed amoung hexadecimal code any ASCI characters with in the file.
