PC sudden shutdown

lately when i am running a program eg now i was running spybot,the computer just closed down , had to reboot, it happens from time to time,not every day sometimes when nothing else is running.
any ideas,
my Os xp home
Motherboard Name Abit AT7-MAX2
Memory Bus Properties Effective Clock 400 MHz
Bandwidth 3204 MB/s

Have a look at the thread called "Does your XP restart on its own" above. You'll find loads of things to try in there, but don't hold your breath as some of us have been trying to get to the bottom of this for over a month.

the problem with xp is, the default says, if you detect any problems, shut down or restart.

Go into control panel, system, advanced, startup and recovery settings and remove the tick saying to restart when a problem is encountered. Now you should at least get an error message.

if we had purchased any other product under the sales of goods act, we would be refunded our money, but the software are allowed to sell us faulty goods, and have the cheek to say we are only paying to use it on one machine, i can go on forever but i won't
