Is there two ports on the modem? Ifso try the other one.

There is usually an option in the BIOS to disable the modem or LAN to wake the pc, make definate this is not enabled.

Switch the PC off, Windows shutting down does not do this. If there's no switch on the PSU do it at the wall plug.

There is only one port for the modem.
Being my fisrt ever pc,i don't know how to check
the bios.

Are then here Iam sure is your prob, ok it is quite easy:

WhenPC boots look for Hit DEL to enter setup or BIOS, it maybe F1 F2 they vary. Once in there it should be in one of the directories, once found save and exit.

So far i have been unplugging the phoneline from the back of the pc.This stops the problem, but is this the only way?

Don't keep unplugging phone lines the plugs only have a life of 50 connexions, anything else is luck.

as stated before go ionto bios and unselect wake up on modem

That may be listed as "Wake on LAN" in the bios
