A friend wants tu ugrade his pc, but can't remember or find the paperwork for the specification. Is there anyway of looking, without physically stripping down the pc, to find out what the specs are for the memory, harddrive, graphics card, video, sound etc etc.

There are numerous ways to find this information, one of the best tools is Belarc Advisor click here to download the utility.

There is indeed a way by stripping it down and having a look but it's not always as easy as not all parts always have lables so generally software is the best means.

This should give you some information about your system.
Click on "Start" and go to "Accessories"
Click on "System Tools", then "System Information".
Go to "Control Panel", click on "Systems", then click on "hardware" then click on the "Device Manager". Expand the + signs to see what info is ther. The first method will give you more info than the second.

But you can begin by clicking on Start + Run then type dxdiag into the box and click ok, this will give you information by clicking on the various tabs at the top of the DxDiagnotic panel.
