My 8 year old son has asked for a PC for his birthday so I've contacted a small local PC shop for a system/quote. He has come up with the system below for £650. Does this sound like a reasonable price for a system that hopefully will serve my son for the next few years? TIA

Sound like a good deal, but if it is for your son, you may want to think about upgrading the Hard-Drive in the not too distant future. 80gigs is nothing for a hardcore gamer.... My friend has 1 280gig and 1 160gig and he used up the 160gig drive just installing his games, and that doesn't include office and nero.

Looks OK to me. Make sure that the Windows XP operating system is XP SP2.

The only things that seem to be missing are a modem and an 'Office' type suite.

try dell

i would get a smaller tft and get a bigger hard disk.

You could download "OpenOffice.org" from... erm.... openoffice.org (click here)

It is a FREE office suite, but it is about 100megs, so I wouldn't go near it if you are on dialup.

Ask for a PCI-Express Mobo

Then at least it is "Future Proof"

click here and look under home PC's and make your own to order

I am sure you can get better than that

You probably can, but £650 is still quite cheap for all that. If you shop around, you probably be able to get it from about £300, but then you probably wont get a VDU nor mouse and keyboard with it.

My local shop has a keyboard and mouse for £20, a MS one. Also a flat screen CRT 19inch for £99.00.

I was thinking that the hard drive could be bigger, although at 8 years old he is not into Doom 3/Half Life 2 massive installation type games yet. That's my realm at present on my own PC lol
