PC sometimes can’t “see” external drive

I store all my files, documents, photos, etc, on an external hard drive and have a shortcut on the desktop to go straight to it.

Quite often when I click on the shortcut the following error message appears:

“The drive or network connection that the shortcut ‘Ext G Drive 200GB.lnk’ refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again.”

There is no disk to insert, the cable is firmly attached and the only remedy seems to be to switch off and re-boot. This invariably works.

There is no pattern to it and sometimes weeks pass without any problem. Can anyone please tell me why this happens and what I can do to prevent it.

If it's a USB Connection go to Device manager and uninstall the drivers for it and reboot. It should find the device and reinstall the drivers.
