For the last couple of days,my pc has slowed down so much that there has to be something going on.Startup has slowed to a crawl, when you click on a short cut to start a program the screen sometimes freezes, toolbar disappears, shortcuts go,20-30 secs later it all comes back, but is still very slow. One program I've used alot I've just had to reinstall using XP's smart restore. Can someone please tell me what's going on....Please!

What spec machine are you using? ram size, cpu speed, processor type?

also do you have a firewall running on your system?

since you use windows xp, and i assume you have the system restore running? this can take up processor speed, disabling it might help.
