PC shuts down whenever I boot up

I have an Acer laptop (running Vista) which is about 1 and a half years old. Whenever I start it up, I am presented with two options - 1) to start windows in repair mode or 2) to start windows normally. It will shut down about 5-10 seconds after selecting either option.

Would anyone any idea what is wrong with me laptop, and how i could possibly fix it.

Your help is greatly appreciated

Try in safe mode and see if it will work.if so last good configuration or system restore.

It may need a good clean.

Is the hard drive ok?

I think, but am not sure, that in the "D" drive on Acer laptops there is a repair program. (This should return your laptop to factory settings) I know this is not much help, but if you copied these files to a CD, try booting up from that - or, of course, if you have system CD's provided with the laptop - boot from those. Might work.

If you can't access the OS or "D" drive, of course, this won't help much.

Heat, i would check the CPU fan first

If it shuts down, then heat.
If it reboots then corrupt files / hard drive.

Oh dear.. it could be related to the fan. The laptop has been making some sort of mechanical noise lately.
