PC running slowly

Lately my computer is running a bit slowly. It takes ages to boot and for programs to open. Once they are open its not too bad but I would like to get it running a bit faster. Is reinstalling the operating system the best way to do this or can anyone suggest anything a bit less radical.

Thanks
Al

Thanks for your replies. I am running Windows XP Service Pack 2. I have tried defragmenting. I've also run lots of different cleaners, including CCleaner. I'll have a look at that site when I get a chance, I'm at work at the moment, so it'll have to be later. Maybe that will do the trick.

Thanks agai
