PC restarts itself & reboots

  jarani 22:52 14 Oct 09

I had this PC, MEDION, running windows XP
for at least 3 years now and in daily use

over the last 3 days when closed properly
in the evenings I find it on in the mornings
so I checked tonight to watch it switch off
and then switch on again after some 4 minutes
and boot up fully, including wireless connection

The wireless connection is unprotected
what could cause this please ? any ideas ?

If the PC is shut down it should not be capable of restarting without pressing the start button.
In my experience they are all buttons that require some degree of movement to restart the PC.
I would tend to think that if they fail they fail off rather than restarting.
If only in suspense then PCs can restart if the router is on and boot from LAN is enabled in the bios.

I had a similar problem recently except mine started up again within 30 seconds. I traced it to the BIOS battery. Once replaced it shuts down properly. It was also waking up from Standby too, but again that's now resolved.

QL & Spartacus - many thanks for your comments
it turns off as if it was a restart, also
it no longer does MS updates automatically
I will try your suggestions tomorrow

Also check BIOS is not set to Modem etc to boot the PC. As it can be set to be like a wake up call for the PC
