PC Problem booting with XP

I have an Evesham PC running XP - 7 years old. When starting up the process stops at the initial boot screen before windows starts. I then switch off at the start button and after several restarts the system usually completes. However on occasion, after windows starts and commences "loading personal settings" I get a message that windows has encountered a problem and has to close. It then restarts. I only have a 250gb hard drive and realize the unit is getting a bit old but cannot find an definitive problem with it when checking. I have 3GB of RAM. Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

Start - run -type

sfc /scannow

press OK

let windows scan for and replace missing or corrupt windows files - it will take awhile to complete.

May be a corrupt driver

PS as it stops after BIOS try it on Default settings after writing old settings down on paper
