PC migration - walk-through and software?

  Andanotherthing 15:29 28 Mar 07

I'm going to need to move all those programs and files over to a new comp soon. PC Advisor had an article on this recently but I don't remember any mention of a walk-you-through-it website -or, more importantly, any recommended free software.

Is usb to usb possible (are usb cables made for this?) or is it null modem via parallel ports?

Any hints and tips or directions welcomed.

I think that Andanotherthing may mean software to assist with the transfer of programs and files (something on the lines of LapLink or this: click here)

If you have XP then there is the Files and Folders Transfer Wizard which will help. See:

Serif are selling PCMover, which they say is designed for exactly this purpose - for £9.95, p&p free.

I haven't read any of the links, but if you are going to use Vista,on the new computer, a program is provided on it to copy any files, programs etc to the new one, direct from the old one, either by cable, wireless if you have it, or by copying to cd/dvd
