PC Logon Protection

At the moment I have set up my PC so that on start-up I, and members of my family, have immediate access to the Internet, Outlook Express and a couple of other features without the need to enter IDs or passwords. It occurs to me however that if someone were to break into my house while I'm on holiday they would have similar access with possible disastrous and malicious consequences. Is there a simple way that I can set my PC up so that users, prior to start-up, need to enter an ID/password to gain access? I have looked at XP Help on the subject but find it confusing.
