PC keeps accessing A:\ drive

Popped round my folks yesterday and decided I needed to quickly look something up on the web.

Their PC took ages to boot (winxp) and whatever I did, the pc wanted to check the floppy drive. I only launched outlook express and internet explorer.

Would a badly frag'd hard drive cause this? I know it needs defragging, but I haven't had time to do it for them yet.

To remove floppy seek on computer

Put a floppy disc in the drive. Double click it to open it's window. Now close the window, leave the floppy in the drive, and double click the C drive to open it. Now remove the floppy disc and finally close the C drive.
This apparently silly procedure can remove a left over referencing to the A drive.

The Floppy as been taken out before the program as been shut down

As woodchip says, also another one that will sometimes work is. Place a blank floppy in the drive, open "a" drive from "My Computer" and format the floppy! Don't know why, but it does seem to remove the association of previous floppy/program. j.
