PC hangs on Windows XP screen during startup

Some help sought to ease frantic husband....

A pc running xp pro with sp3 was fine yesterday. On starting up this morning it boots as far as the black screen with the windows xp logo on it and then just seems to hang...

No changes were made to the machine but I think there might have been a windows automatic update (as I rejected it for my pc)on shutdown... could this be the issue?

I'm not sure how to start the diagnostics.
Thanks in advance for your help

try safe mode hit [repeatedly] the F8 key once the post has stopped before the windows logo appears. Try last known good start if not try safe mode.

I'm an XP user as well, I did notice on my desktop this morning that it was asking to install new updates from microsoft, and I accepted, no probs for me. As howard64 said try last known good configuration that worked in safe mode.....F8. Also do u have internet security on your desktop?? Any kindly try the suggestions, if still no joy, just post back as someone in the forum will def be able to help u
