I have a PC with windows XP. It is intermittingly hanging where I have to turn off as ctrl alt del does not work. It can hang on start up or in an application. If you leave it for anytime it will hang when you try to use again.

When the check of the file system is completed it says 'the size of the windows\wiaservclog entry is not valid'.

I have found out that WIA stands for windows image acquisiton but cannot find out what this probale relates to.

Cananyone help, please

have you tried bootvis?

The longer the machine is turned off, the longer it stays useable?
If this is the case it may be a overheating problem and your processor is getting sunstroke.
Its a good thing to check cooling fans when this happens, you'll be suprised how many hangs are caused by heat problems.

Excuse my ignorance what is bootvis?

The heat issue did cros my mind as the PC is in the loft and it does get hot up there, but where does the message re wiaservc fit into this?

I don't think that bootvis is relevant - it speeds up boot-up click here

What are your temperatures? click here

try disabling Zone alarm or anti virus and see if this prevents the problem.

Look in Task manager and c what programs are "Not respondin"

Run msconfig from run line and disable a start up program one at a time - to eleimnate this problem..

I meant to say "bootvis is IRRELEVANT"

I have not loaded zonealarm and am a bit wary of disabling AV as I get so much spam mail and the occassional batch of emails with viruses.

When the machine hangs it locks up completely and you cannit access task manager or anything else.

IWiaLog Interface

The IWiaLog interface provides methods to enable minidrivers to log trace, error, and warning messages to the diagnostic log file wiaservc.log. The prototypes for the methods appear in wia.h. The diagnostic log file wiaservc.log is found in the Windows directory, or in the directory returned by the GetWindowsDirectory system API call, which is described in the Platform SDK documentation.

Look for the log to see what it says
