Pc going back in time

I have an old pc where everytime I switch it on the date shows as the year 2001. The time is incorrect too. It has an AMD 3200 cpu. I reckon the pc hasn't been used for up to a year and I think it may have had a virus on it but it appears to be functioning OK. The pc is 5+ years old.

Could it be the motherboard battery that has lost its charge after not being used for a while?

Yes it is the battery. If you are lucky you can get another from your supermarket (watch battery)

If not it will have a soldered/pressed cable and connector. Consult/Google your mfrs website.
