PC Friendly

I have played a completely legitimate video of Notting Hill many times with VideoLan player. However, last night, a programme called PC Friendly popped up and blocked acess to VideoLan. It refused playback without installation of PC Friendly files. I have Gogled PC Friendly and I do not particularily like what it seem to collect. Also I do not see why it it is necessary to install now after many successful playbacks with Videolan .
Can anyone explain why it has popped up after several years uinactivity and is there a workaround to go direct to VideoLan?
Many thanks.

Thanks, Bagsey, that was why I was suspicious!
I just do not understand how it has 'popped out of the woodwork' suddenly after several years.
Any ideas on workarounds?

Found the solution!
Put in DVD. Cancel PC Friendly installation request.
Then go to my Computer (Win XP) > DVD Player (probably showing PC Friendly logo) > Right click and then select Play with VLC Player (which is my default DVD player).
This seems to bypass PC Friendly and the DVD plays normally.
