PC freezes whenever I use the usb to attach anything. The DVD writer will not recognise bland discs but will view ones with stuff on them. If I unplug everything from the usb's the PC will boot up as normal soon as I attach something to USB it freezes. My mouse and keyboard are ok.

Any ideas please it has just started recently. Not put anything on PC or downloaded anything.

Refresh USB Ports
In device manager Uninstall EVERYTHING under the heading USB,
reboot the PC let XP find and install new hardware.
Your equipment should now be recognised.

be careful if you only have a USB keyboard / mouse

only plug usb in after you have started unless its a ex drive

Have tried this to no effect do you think it may be the motherboard or CPU

How much ram do you have ??

Its a Driver problem that is the cause. You could try remove all your USB hardware from sockets then go to device manager bottom of list in USB click on + to Expand USB start from bottom of USB and uninstall all USB then restart your computer and allow Windows to load all the relevant Drivers for your PC then try the Drive. It could be the Electronics board inside the HD Caddy thats gone. Try all other USB first and make sure they all work before plugging the drive in

PS for printer Load Drivers before you plug it in
