PC Freeze

When starting PC after long periods (overnight etc) Windows XP loads OK but when moving into an application (internet, Word, Card games etc)the programme works initially but then after varying periods of time from almost immediatly to several minutes the mouse and graphics become unstable then freeze. Control/alt/delete has no effect and the PC must be powered off and re-booted. I have managed to get into Task Manager as the system is crashing and seen the CPU reading going to 100% at which point the system freezes. If left for several minutes without touching the mouse or keyboard the CPU reading drops and the PC is back up and running, usually without further problems until the next long shut down. PC has Norton firewall and anti-virus installed and running and scans show PC is virus free. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
