pc does not recognise CD drives

  odenrot 16:11 16 Feb 04

Have experienced numerous pc failures. Am now up and running but unable load information from CDs. Message tells me no drives loaded, or words to that effect and they do no show in My Computer on desktop although they are in Device Manager and shown as working. Can anyone please help me. Many thanks

Make sure the power cable is connected properly.

You don't need firmware downloads for a CD/DVD-ROM or rewriter drives - they all use the basic Windows CDROM driver.

Firmware is a different thing altogether and is very unlikely to be relevant in this case.

The most likely cause - as outlined in the thread link provided by ianeon - is that the connections from the drives are loose or damaged or that the IDE cable may have become dislodged at one or other end.

This fact is given emphasis by the fact the drives are listed in Device Manager.
