Yes your phone could be used as a modem in this way.

What do you want the phone detected as anyway?

I'm trying to transfer songs from my pc to my phone. So, I guess I want my phone detected as a portable storage device, not a modem. But, if it'll perform the same function I'll take it, can someone guide me as to if this is correct though?

What happens if you plug in the phone BEFORE starting WMP?
