PC Crashing - Any ideas please?

My friend's had problems with his PC since his son went on a games site (not sure if this is connected to his problem or just coincidence). He has Windows XP Home Edition and he uses Avast!, Ad-Aware, Zone Alarm and Prevx - all up to date. When he turns the pc on it is hit or miss if it will work. Roughly it will work one time in four. If it fails to work he ends up with a blue screen. If it works he is able to log onto one of the four users and the pc will run ok. Then when he logs off it crashes when it says "saving settings". Any advice on what the problem could be and the remedy for it would be appreciated. Thank you!

I would check start - run - type config sys and go to the top right hand tab marked startup. Take the tick out of the right hand boxes except for virus and zonealarm. Restart and athen run your virus checker and spybot and adaware etc.
