pc constantly freezes - help!

I recently upgraded from win 98 to win98se. now my pc seems to freeze regularly . Can't seem to pinpoint any particular reason for it . Timing always varies, sometimes after an hour , sometimes during boot up. Performed scandisk and went normally for 80% then last 20% took 45 mins and message flashed up about crosslink files or something like that. Any suggestions?

Win98..Old Pc..Could it be the HDD is on the way out...

Try running scan disk again...Does it do the same...Any funny clinking noises from the PC at the point scan-disk suddenly grinds to a virtual hault??

But mainly
