Can I log in to Windows 2000 Professional without using the password login box at all ?

Yes, as long as you know the password... tweakui will log you on automatically.

It is also possible to starup without the logon screen but at the moment it escapes me.

Go to control panel and then "users and passwords".

Then untick the box saying "users must enter a password".

Go the Users & Passwords section of the control panel and put a tick in the box telling the computer to automatically assume this user is always logging on.

dio. sic. did this & lost everything Outlook express, favourites everything still trying to find stuff even lost "search for files and folders" from the Start menu.

Am I dio. sic?

If so, it seems that you have logged on as a different user which does not have the OE, favourites, etc.

Try to relog on as the administrator (or whatever the original name was).

Don't panic! They are not lost.

Just hidden from you as they are those of another user.
