I am looking for a free or cheap program that I can use to protect some of my files and folders. I am wary of "freeware" as some do strange things like defaulting your browser to some weird one and having to spend hours to get rid of it. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Often good freeware comes packaged with "crapware" and great care is needed when installing to makesure all unwanted otions are unticked, reliable download sources are hard to comeby nowadays

Ninite is a good site but does not offer what you want at this time.

AxCrypt will do what you wish but comes with oOPEN Cand - if you download it You may decline OpenCandy offers by selecting the 'I do not accept' radio buttton at the offer screen, and Softonic offers by unchecking the checkbox. You must still accept license agreement in the first dialog.
