Password problem

My nephew runs a laptop with Win XP professional. He uses his own start up password. However, earlier today the password was rejected on two occasions despite it having been entered correctly. When he sitches on the laptop he now gets the administrator startup which he is able to bypass, but it will not allow access to his own files and folders.
Can anyone advise how we can restore his own desktop and access his files and folders again.
Help would be much appreciated as he cannot access his school work.

Would starting up in safe mode and logging on as admin enable access to the files, don't know whether this will work because I only log on with administrators rights

Thanks VoG and Terryf for your suggestions. We eventually managed to do a system restore which resolved things. I did not initially consider this as it seemed too easy an option. Will in future start with the simple things!
