How can I password protect some photgraphs. I'm using Vista.

I can create a compressed file but can't create a password for it. If I double click to open it, Windows Photo Gallery tries to open the file and fails. What should I open it with?

Not as simple as the site makes it appear (just tried it). I don't use the built-in compression, I use 7zip instead click here which allows you to compress and password protect in one go. You can even create a passworded, executable file with it, so you needn't actually install it in place of built-in ZIP. Select Create SFX and make sure encryption is set to 7z if you want the aforementioned executable file.

make sure compression is set to 7z, not encryption
